On June 4, 1923, the Canossa Convent was started in Vypin. The Convent began its journey in a two-room hut and was later moved to an old masonry building. It was in need of a renovation. The old Dining room, Kitchen and sleeping rooms were gutted, walls repaired, windows replaced and wiring redone in the interiors. Chapel interiors were elevated. Taking in the cue from the influence of buildings in Fort Kochi and Mattanchery, the exterior of the convent was revitalized. In response to this requirement, the design is on various levels utilising the contours looking out to the tea plantation. As one moves from room to room these interconnecting spaces create a continual sense of anticipation for each of the spaces just beyond. With covered porticoes, the house engages distant views and its immediate surroundings.
The project extends the house into the garden, the plan shifted and manipulated to capture views of beautiful mature trees on the site. Distinct spaces are created: a courtyard, a formal lawn, a raised family living area and patio deck offering guests the opportunity to sit outside and enjoy the view. Skylights flood the interior with natural light.
